Jacob's 31 Day Halloween Movie Challenge - Day 6
Day 6: It Comes at Night
Right off the bat, it should be noted that this is a very divisive movie. Critics were really into it and audiences really weren't. To me it was straight down the middle.
The trailers are definitely misleading because they portray the film as surreal and dreamlike by using the handful of scenes from the movie that are in that style. The rest of the film is a tense drama about a family hiding in a house after what appears to be the outbreak of a deadly disease. They allow another family into their home and the distrust begins.
My issue with this film is that it never really seems to make strong choices. It doesn't want to fully be a horror film, but doesn't want to just be a drama either, but it's not exactly a thriller. The performances are good, but it's clear they don't have a ton to work with. The families are never completely with or against each other, they try to get along but are still not completely trusting, which might be more realistic but it's not particularly interesting to watch.
The whole film seems to be preoccupied with being realistic instead of making strong dramatic choices or creating frightening imagery, which is what keeps it from being memorable. For me, it's the definition of "okay."
But the performances are good and those handful of creepy sequences are well done, it's enough to say I felt like my 90 minutes were at least somewhat well spent.
